The Convenience Store by the Sea by Sonoko Machida

he Convenience Store by the Sea was one of my impulse buys last year, mainly because the beautiful cover caught my eye and because I have very fond memories of Japanese convenience stores (konbinis). When my husband and I stayed in Tokyo for more than a month, konbinis were an essential part of our daily itinerary. I’m pretty sure that visiting konbinis in Japan is a cultural experience in itself!
Now, on to the book. It centers on Tenderness, a convenience store chain with the motto, “Caring for People, Caring for You.” The story explores the joys and sorrows of people brought together by a single place, whether they are regular customers or just passing through. Each person has a story worth telling and celebrating. These stories may seem ordinary and might not blow you away, but rest assured, there is so much to learn and reflect on in each one.
My favorite is Chapter Five: Advent Calendar Cookies of Love and Longing. I was deeply touched by the love Yasuo and Mitsuri have for each other. Marriage is a union of two people, and maintaining one’s individuality can be challenging when you become a single unit. But with unconditional support, pursuing your own passions does not feel so difficult. If anything, it makes it easier.
Just one thing: Shiba being portrayed as a charismatic manager with a fan club did not really appeal to me. Personally, I felt the story would have stood just as well without this narrative. Overall, this is a light and enjoyable read, perfect for the new year 💖
Welcome to Tenderness!
A quaint seaside town in Kitakyushu, Mojiko is full of hidden delights. And one unexpected treasure is the 24/7 convenience store, Tenderness.
At first glance, it’s a store like any other.
Sure, it’s a bit odd that the handsome manager has his own fan club. And perhaps the customers are somewhat eccentric. But there’s a warmth about Tenderness that draws you in.
The bright lights are always on. The employees know you by name. And the shelves are stacked with delicious treats, from strong hot coffee to sweet parfaits, egg sandos to ramen, crispy fried chicken to refreshing soba.
After a while, you get the feeling that whatever you need might just be waiting for you here…
